Optical Technologies Initiates Mag Roller Coding Program

Long Island City, N.Y. — In its never-ending pursuit for improved mag roller technology, Optical Technologies Corporation now etches a lot code into each mag roller. The new process will allow both OTC and its customers to track mag roller performance by lot.

"No other company in the industry that I am aware of marks its mags," said OTC President Lester Cornelius. "We are taking a lead in this effort to provide additional security to the customer. Marking the mags gives the customer better process controls and better control over their quality."

Each mag roller has a code number etched into its metal end. OTC will maintain quality information on each lot code. "Customers can get mag rollers from all sorts of sources," Cornelius said. "This is one way that they can identify the source of the mag roller by its specific lot."

"As we have learned by taking part in the standardized testing program and ASTM, there is a right way to test products and components and many wrong ways," Cornelius said. "This is the right way to process mag rollers."

The new coding program will drastically improve quality and consistency, especially if used in league with Optical Technologies Corporation's highly successful "Silver Platter" Program for mag rollers, which uses OTC's popular Chargeshare' mag roller coating. This program allows remanufacturers to send in mag rollers with the magnets and contacts intact for coating.

Optical Technologies has identified magnet removal and reassembly as a major problem to most remanufacturers, especially when using a mixture of components from various sources. Magnet removal and reassembly is labor intensive. The contact and spring alignment is crucial.

"The questionable engineering of presses that are flooding the marketplace has led to out-of-round mag roller sleeves and improper replacement of end caps," Cornelius said. "This results in light and dark banding." Optical Technologies has engineered a device and incorporated it into its production line that will verify end cap alignment. OTC ensures that OEM alignment will stay intact.

"This program saves the remanufacturer a fortune in wasted labor costs and ensures consistent performance," Cornelius said. "Optical Technologies has removed the labor involved in disassembly from the remanufacturer, removed the inconsistent performance associated with improper re-assembly of the magnets, contacts, and endcaps and removed the cost of shipping the mag rollers with the magnets to be reprocessed. The coding process only heightens the effectiveness of the Silver Platter program."
